EPISODE #08
The Grow Lights!
If you’ve ever watched the TV show “Undercover Boss,” you’ll notice that when most CEOs and company leaders go undercover to work at the ground level, they have only a little idea of what goes on in the day-to-day operations of their businesses. However, this is not the case for Bert or Danny Mucci here at Mucci Farms. Although they’re owners of the company and their roles have evolved, they grew up on the family farm, and have done every job from harvesting, to packing, to even driving pallets onto trucks with forklifts.
Many limitations that farmers faced years ago have now been made a reality thanks to significant technological advancements. The most major of which, are supplemental grow lights. This technology supplements daylight to compensates for short winter days, allowing for local fruit and vegetable production 365 days a year.
Additionally, grow lights help create an ideal climate through the winter months for plants to produce much more consistent flavor and yield. The biggest advantage of winter production is that local produce is kept on the grocery store shelves and our fellow citizens all along the supply chain enjoy full time year-round employment, in what is typically a seasonal industry.
With an eye towards the future, Bert and Danny, along with co-owners Joe and Gianni, are committed to expanding the Mucci Farms grow light acreage to maximize efficiencies, quality and local production. Listen to Spill the Greens Episode 8 for more details on how the lights work and how they help our region produce sustainable fruits and vegetables all winter long!
Since their early days as young boys on the farm, Bert and Danny have seen the farming industry undergo many changes.
